Simplified Traffic Lights Using 8051 Maxim DS89C4XX Embedded Controller (MDE)

Traffic lights are signaling devices positioned at road intersections, pedestrian crossings, and other locations to control flows of traffic. An actual traffic light alternates the right way of road users by displaying lights of a standard color (red, yellow/amber, and green), using a universal color code (and a precise sequence to enable comprehension by those who are color blind). In the typical sequence of colored light, (1) illumination of the green light allows traffic to proceed in the direction denoted; (2) illumination of the yellow/amber light denoting ready to proceed in the direction denoted; and (3) illumination of the red signal prohibits any traffic from proceeding. Usually, the red light contains some orange in its hue, and the green light contains some blue, for the benefit of people with red-green color blindness, and green lights in many areas are in fact blue lenses on a yellow light (which together appear green). Program was written for the MDE trainer kit to control the outputs of the microcontroller in a given sequence. Green and red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are connected to the microcontroller outputs. First, the assembly language programs were written to turn on only one LED and then turn off the same LED. Next, the program is improved by making the LED blink, and then, the input switches are read. The walk push button and the other indicating a car at the crossing light are turned on. As switches are mechanical objects, some debounce time (timer programmed dead time of 50 ms) is also placed in the program. The light is controlled as long as each LED with one switch is pressed, and the LED is ON and when the switch is not depressed, the LED is OFF. Then, the LED will be made to blink once per second as long as the associated switch is ON. Finally, the program is improved when a subroutine is added where the traffic light controller is on green or red stays ON while the corresponding switch is ON. If more than one switch is activated, then the ON is for the red light. The LEDs simulate the traffic lights and switches simulate the walk push button and the car presence sensor at a crossroad.

Implementation of Modern Traffic Light Control System

IJSRP Journal

There are many problems of congestion with traffic light in many cities. This problem of congestion can be caused by long time delays of traffic light’s Red light. When there are emergency case at traffic light intersection which are always busy with many vehicles, this problem can also be caused. The possibilities of traffic jams caused by traffic light can reduce by using the Programmable Integrated Circuit (PIC) 16F877A microcontroller. The intended system is to change the sequence back to the normal sequence after triggering for the emergency modes by using the controller. Many accidents which often happen at the traffic light intersections will be reduced because of using this system. The system that provides the traffic control of six way and four junction of modern traffic light has been implemented with arrowed signal for each direction. The arrowed signal of red, yellow and green light are displayed with LEDs. There are two modes of traffic light sequence in this system. One is the normal sequence and the other is the emergency sequence. The phases of red, yellow and green are determined by computer programming based on the patterns of traffic light congestion.

The traffic lights are also known as traffic signals which are used to provide assistance in controlling city traffics and streamlining the current traffic situations. The traffic lights are used since 1868. They are used by traffic sergeant to avoid congestion and to maintain the proper flow of city traffic. As years passed, these lights are evolved with automatic controls, Pedestrian supporters and so on. There are several standards followed in implementation and design. The smart traffic light controller is designed to develop a traffic signal based on avoidance of traffic congestion and also innovative control to clear the traffic for emergency vehicle. The emergency vehicle would have a transmitter within it, which would transmit a signal to the receiver side, this will enable green signal in the corresponding pole. The light of the signal is controlled by automatic timers which are built in by discrete components. The automatic timers are controlled using Arduino boards. The i...

Development Of A Microcontroller-Based Traffic Light System For Road Intersection Control

Mai Anh Trần

The control of traffic at road junction, which was done purely by human effort, proves to be inefficient owing to the increasing rate of both motorists as well as the complexity of road networks. This inadequacy brought about the use of discrete solid-state electronics up to the usage of a computer controlled microprocessor, but the intelligence of this method was still limited to meet the demand of modern age. Thus, the need for the development of a microcontroller-based traffic light control system. This paper explores the design and implementation of a microcontroller-based traffic light system for road intersection control. The traffic light system is designed using Programmable Integrated Circuit (PIC) 16F84A microcontroller, power section, crystal oscillator and light emitting diode (LED). Then, for effective traffic control, the PIC is implemented via an IC programmer using a mikrobasic program written in Basic language. The developed traffic light control system is tested by constructing a prototype that resembles the real application. The functionality of the prototype shows that the developed system can be used for a real life traffic control at road intersection. Besides, the developed system can be employed as a training kit in learning traffic light control system design and operation. Also, it can be used as a teaching aid in schools for various road users.

REAL TIME TRAFFIC LIGHT CONTROLLER

IJESRT Journal

There is enormous increase in population of city and number of vehicles on the road day by day. With this increasing urban population and the number of vehicles, need to control streets, highways and roads become major issue. The main issue behind today's traffic problem is the techniques that are used for traffic management. Today's traffic management system has no prominence on live traffic scenario, which leads to ineffective traffic management systems. These traffic timers just have the preset time. This is similar to using open loop system. The proposed system incorporate a closed loop system using camera, thus making it possible to predict the exact time on traffic light timers. The traffic light timers are showing correct time to regulate the traffic, thus the time wasted on undesired green signals (green signal, when there is no traffic) will be saved. Timer for every lane is the simplest way to control traffic. And if those timers are predicting exact time then automatically the system will be more effective. This project is being implemented by using the Matlab software and it aims to prevent heavy traffic congestion. This project measures the number of vehicles present on the road. Moreover, for implementing this project Image processing technique is used. At first, film of a lane is recorded by a camera. A web camera is placed in a traffic lane that will record images of the road on which we want to control traffic. Then these images are efficiently processed to know the traffic density. According to the computed data from Matlab, the controller will send the command to the traffic LEDs to show particular time on the signal to manage traffic.

Traffic in a city is very much affected by traffic light controllers. When waiting for a traffic light, the driver loses time, manpower, increases air pollution and the car waste fuel. To make traffic light controllers more intelligent, this paper exploit the emergence of novel technologies, such as communication networks and sensor networks, as well as the use of more sophisticated algorithms for setting traffic lights. The Intelligent Traffic Control System is formed as a network of embedded systems. Intelligent traffic light control does not only mean that traffic lights are set in order to minimize wait-times, but also takes care of the perpetual need for safety critical traffic automation. The main goal however, is to make efficient planning and management of traffic control systems. This piece of work will proffer solution to the problem caused by the existing system in the state. Some of these problems will be highlighted in this report and analysis of the intelligent traffic signal light control system will be made. This work will lead to a novel system in which traffic light controllers and the behavior of car drivers are optimized using machine-learning methods.
