Lens is a town in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region, 35 km south-west of Lille.

Although it has close to 34,000 inhabitants, its agglomeration is one of the densest in France, with the urban area of Douai-Lens having a population of 540,000. Linked to the county of Artois itself belonging to the county of Flanders, Lens was attached to the kingdom of France in 1180 and was erected in commune in the thirteenth century. A fortified town, it suffered during the Hundred Years 'War and then the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century: but it was precisely at Lens that Conde defeated the Spaniards in 1648.

It was with the exploitation of coal and the creation of the company of Mines of Lens in the middle of the XIXth century that the city develops considerably, capital of one of the most dynamic coalfields of the country.

Very affected during the two world wars, the city is rebuilt and undergoes a new transformation when mining is stopped in the 1980s.

Economic activity is diversifying (trade, agro-food, university pole), partially curbing demographic decline (Lens has lost 10 000 inhabitants since 1962). Finally, in 2012, the inauguration of the Louvre-Lens museum on the site of a former mine, hosting exhibitions of works belonging to the Louvre Museum in Paris, symbolizes the transformation of the city and its opening to cultural tourism 444,000 visitors in 2016).

Things to see and do

Before the inevitable visit of the Louvre-Lens, a discovery of several buildings and sites allows the visitor to better understand the mining past of the city and its policy of reconversion.

This route passes through the church of Saint-Léger: the current reinforced concrete building was rebuilt after the First World War, inaugurated in 1926 (and its large organ in 1930). The first church dates from the 10th century and has been restored or rebuilt several times. A statue of the Virgin of the 17th century is installed in the chapel dedicated to the dead of the Great War.

Also worth noting is the university scientific cluster set up in the former offices of Compagnie des Mines headquarters or, in a very different genre, the Félix-Bollaert stadium, which hosted several World Cup matches in 1998.

To understand what the mining industry was, visiting the Base and Slag 11/19 (numbers of former wells) provides a complete picture of what a mining site could be like: pit tile, heaps The exploitation of coal) and the city where the workers lived. The complex also hosts cultural and economic structures.

Finally, you will not forget the commercial heart of the city, the Place Jean Jaurès, with its colorful shops, and the SNCF railway station, dating from 1926. Its shape evokes a locomotive, and its Art Deco style is remarkable. Inside, cubist mosaics evoke scenes of working life.

It is now time to visit the Louvre Museum - Lens, inaugurated in 2012. Located close to the highest stables in Europe and the stadium, the hotel is made up of several buildings with contemporary architecture, with transparent facades Glass and steel.

The visit includes semi-permanent exhibitions of collections preserved in Paris and also allows to discover "the backstage" of the establishment. A resource center and a park are also accessible. Price of guided tours: 6 and 3 euros (but a large part of the museum is free of charge). Information on +33 3 21 18 62 62.

A stop at Lens can finally include a swimming session at the swimming pool with an Olympic pool (price: 2,70 and 2 euros), and give rise to walks including the municipality and its surroundings, where the industrial heritage cohabits with More green spaces. Information on +33 3 21 67 66 66.

FAQs

What lens to take on holiday? ›

Most travel photographers will tell you that a lens with a focal length of around 24-105mm is a good choice for full frame if you don't want to be continually uncoupling lenses in the field and carrying multiple primes to cover the same focal length.

Is 85mm a good travel lens? ›

The 24-70mm will provide you with stunning all-around photography every minute of the day, while the 85mm will step in for the finer details. After hiking a mountain, whip out the 85mm in the city for a creamy close-up. The Prime Pairing: If you want two prime lenses, opt for the 35mm and the 85mm.

How many lenses to travel with? ›

A smart lens purchase will improve your photography and enable a growth in your photographic creativity. Perhaps four lenses might just be the sweet spot. Enough to cover a broad range from wide-angle to telephoto. Easy enough to fit in most bags, and could be paired down to two lenses for traveling light.

Is 35mm a good travel lens? ›

On the whole, the 35mm lens is the best for travel photography. 35mm lenses are excellent for landscapes. See, the angle of view isn't too much as with 24mm lenses, and neither is it too narrow as with 50mm lenses.

Which prime lens is best for travel? ›

You will want a wide-angle lens with a focal length of 24mm or less for landscape photography. (Try 16mm or less for crop-sensor cameras.) These lenses let you capture some seriously sweeping vistas and can add a lot of depth and drama to your photos. They're great for making cramped spaces look larger too.

What 2 lenses should every photographer have? ›

2 lenses (this is equivalent to about 60mm and 73mm in 35mm format). Popular prime lenses for portrait photography include 50mm and 85mm when shooting close-ups, or 24mm and 35mm when shooting full length.

How far away to shoot with 85mm lens? ›

With a minimum focusing distance of around 2.8 ft or 85cm, you can't get up close to your subjects. That's where you will start to use a macro lens.

Do I need a wide-angle lens for travel? ›

Ultra-wide-angle lenses are an essential part of a travel photographers kit. Whether you are photographing cityscapes or landscapes or even just photographing in tight spaces these ultra-wide-angle lenses can be very useful.

What lens to bring to Paris? ›

On a full frame camera, a 17-40mm, 17-35mm or 16-35mm lens will come handy. You will often find yourself using the wide end, at the risk of having extreme perspectives! If you can afford it and have a tripod, a tilt shift wide angle will be fine to reduce the perspective distorsion (I wish I had one).

What is the best way to travel with camera lenses? ›

The best place for your camera and lenses is in a bag you carry on the plane with you. Don't check them. That way you are the one responsible for your gear's care and safety, not some tired, overworked TSA agent or baggage handler.

How far should lenses be from eyes? ›

A proper fit should allow for the lenses to lie between 14 and 24 millimeters from your eyes. Finding the right glasses fit doesn't require magic, just the correct measurements.

Can camera lenses go in hold luggage? ›

If the airline does not allow an additional small bag, then your camera and lenses must be in the large piece of your hand luggage. Either you pack your small camera bag in the carry-on bag or you use camera packing cubes or camera cubes.

Which is better 50mm or 35mm? ›

50mm is considered to be the most “normal” focal length. It is the midpoint between two very common categories of lenses: wide-angle and telephoto. 35mm, as its lower number implies, is a slightly wide-angle focal length, but not by much. In other words, 35mm fits more into your composition than 50mm.

What are the disadvantages of a 35mm lens? ›

Cons of a 35mm Lens
  • The wide field of view can lead to potential distortion, especially around the edges of the frame.
  • This lens is not typically ideal for portraits as it doesn't isolate the subject as well as longer lenses.
Sep 17, 2023

Why is 35mm so special? ›

35mm lenses can allow for closer focusing distances, and paired with the wider field of view, they provide a deeper depth of field overall. Depth of field refers to a set distance between the closest and farthest objects in a photo that appears acceptably sharp.

Is 35mm lens good for events? ›

As I previously mentioned you could literally use just the 35mm lens all day for a wedding. There are cheaper f1. 8 or f2 versions out there and on a full frame camera they will give you a shallow enough depth of field. The 35mm will get you in with your subjects and forces you to work harder for your shot.

How do you take contact lenses on holiday? ›

We always recommend taking a few extra pairs and bringing a contact lens travel case. Think of it like packing extra underwear, swimwear, and shorts. If you decide to stay a few extra days, you'll have enough contact lenses to see you through.

What lens is best for outdoor photography? ›

There are two essential lenses that I recommend for landscape photography: a wide angle zoom lens (16-35mm f/2.8) and a telephoto zoom lens (70-200mm f/2.8). These two focal lengths will cover everything from vast, expansive vistas to more abstract and intimate landscape scenarios.

Should I bring a zoom lens for travel? ›

Whether it's because you're in a fast-paced environment or your family doesn't want to wait, having a zoom can help you quickly get the photos you want. For travel, a zoom lens that covers wide angels to a modest telephoto is your best bet.
