How to set up a tent without poles? ›

1. Using Two Half Hitches knots (illustrated above), tie rope between the two trees you've chosen, at a height that is about 2-3 feet above the height of your tent (when pitched with it's poles). 2. Place your tent in the (hopefully flat) spot between the trees.

Fold the tent into quadrants towards the open valves - this allows any air to escape towards the open valves. Roll the tent from the rear of the tent, to the front so any excess air can escape out of the front or side doors. Use straps to tighten the rolled tent. Secure inside the tent bag.

Place the tent footprint or tarp inside (not under) your tent to keep ground moisture at bay. Pitch your tent in a flat or rounded spot, not in a divot or concave area. Otherwise, you could wake up in a puddle. String tarps between trees, or use weighted, free-standing canopies for extra shelter.

Write down all the events you know about so far. Everything you feel excited about, the scenes you can't stop thinking about, the big or small moments that make your story feel alive to you. These are your tentpoles. You'll be relying on them to support the rest of your imaginative process.

It depends on the tent. Many vintage tents require stakes to hold themselves up; modern “pop up” tents may support without stakes. Springbar-style (or Kodiak) canvas tents need stakes to maintain their shape. Of course, if there's any wind expected, the tent should be well staked down, or it may become a kite.

To set up, non-freestanding tents are first staked out and then typically propped up with trekking poles (some, like the Tarptent Double Rainbow, use a single tent pole instead).

Spread Out and Stake Your Tent

With two people, stretch the tent base across the footprint or tarp. Pull the tent tight and stake two opposite corners, to firm up the floor of your tent. Drive stakes straight into the ground, hook facing out, and pound it completely down.

Dry your tent before it's packed away

It's also really not great for your tent. If you leave your tent wet in its bag, then there's a good chance it will be covered in mould or mildew when you next get it out. This will mean having to thoroughly clean the tent, which may well delay your camping holiday hopes.

Pack away carefully

Take your inner tent down first and keep it separate so it stays dry. Shake as much water off the rest of it as much as possible. Ideally, you should wait for it to dry before packing it away, though this isn't always possible. If not, don't worry too much – it's not the end of the world.
